Most people associate open-mike poetry nights with tie-dye, sneaky hits from Pyrex bowls, crusty flip-flops, and the stink of patchouli. But the Bohemia Room at Vlada Lounge is the "Boom Boom Pow" version of those hippie nightmares. Sure, there'll be some political ranting, but it'll likely be followed by Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me."
Every Wednesday evening, you can listen to poets pontificate about everything from sex to health care, down a few drinks, and meet some financially stable and intellectually stimulating hotties.
Check out the jump for a short interview with the Bohemia Room's MC, Ingrid B.
New Times: What makes this spoken word night different from other open-mike nights?
Ingrid B: Me as the host. I'm a little raunchy as far as poetry goes. Plus it's something different to do from the regular. And there's a restaurant next door. They bring food over.
How would you describe the crowd on a typical Wednesday night?
Mostly female. I'd like to see more men in there. The audience is 25 to 35, college educated, single, no kids, mixed, but predominately urban.
You tout the event as having the sexiest audience. Why?
The crowd is grown and sexy. People hear "poetry night" and they think tie-dye Deadhead. We are not that poetry spot at all.
Name a regular performer who people should look out for?
We have house poets. There's Anomaly, Justice, Sophie McNasty, Will Da Real One.
What kinds of subjects are covered?
Sex and politics and everything in between.
