Q&A with Director of Phil Ochs Documentary Part of Opening Night Event at Gables Cinema

Despite what we've seen on Mad Men, the Sixties were not all about capitalistic greed.  In fact, the decade witnessed the explosion of counterculture movements, social revolution, and most importantly the birth of the hippies. Enter Phil Ochs. The anti-Don Draper.

Ochs was an important folk and protest singer who spent the decade battling social injustice while struggling with the pitfalls of stardom, like any good hippie musician.His story is the subject of Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune, a documentary by Kenneth Bowser. The film opens at the Coral Gables Art Cinema Friday with two screenings, 7:30 and 10 p.m. The theater is giving the counterculture hero his due with a special event for the opening starting at 6:30 p.m. Booze and bites included.

As

for the flick itself, Bowser pieces together interviews and performance

footage of the singer, with commentary from contemporaries like Joan

Baez, Tom Hayden, Pete Seeger, and celeb admirers like Sean Penn. Think of a version of Bob Dylan, with a Jim Carey-esque look, but who burned out almost as quickly as he came to prominence. Like many tortured souls, Ochs lived and fought hard, but eventually his

state of mind deteriorated and he committed suicide in 1976.  Learn more about the film here.



It's always easier to champion the rights of the downtrodden and

oppressed when you're drinking, so the cinema has a Bacardi sponsored

open bar to go with free food from Pardo's Peruvian Cuisine for those

who've bought movie tickets. The Folk Club of South Florida will provide

music with what we will imagine will be some covers of Ochs songs and

other social and political tunes from days past. It's not all debauchery

though; the director will introduce both films and engage the audience

in a Q and A through a live video link on the movie screens.
