In early September, the New Theatre announced that it had been bought by Henry and Peter Torres of Astor Development and was slated for demolition. The 25-year-old theater company had inhabited the space on Laguna Street in Coral Gables for 10 years.

Not ready to let a little thing like homelessness put a damper on their upcoming theatrical calendar, New Theatre staff, supporters, and friends immediately set out to find a temporary and/or permanent new home for the group.

Yesterday evening they announced they had reached an agreement with the Roxy Performing Arts Center to carry out the remainder of their 2011 to 2012 season.

The center, located near Florida International University's campus,

currently caters primarily to children ages 3 to 17, offering dance,

drama, and voice classes. As part of the partnership, the Roxy Theatre

Group's advanced students will have the opportunity to audition and work

backstage on New Theatre shows, allowing them to gain Actors' Equity

Association credentials.

The first New Theatre play to premiere at the Roxy PAC will be Chambers Stevens' Twain and Shaw Do Lunch, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 2. Steven Chambers, New Theatre literary manager and director of Twain and Shaw, said he was thrilled about the news.

"I'm very, very excited. I think the move to the new area will bring a new audience the New Theatre has not seen before. Of course we also hope to bring some of our old audience from Coral Gables as well," Chambers said. "The theater is ideal for the piece, and will bring a young audience from the area since the theater itself has a youth acting program and of course there's FIU right across the street. I can't even express how happy I am about this."
