Now that Art Basel is a mere three weeks away, we should all link up in a human centipede chain and get protective of our local art scene. We're all for the hoity-toity art fair and the strange spin-off events, which follow it around like a piece of TP stuck on a Swede's shoe. (Alexander McQueen-designed rugs anyone? Hello Kitty pop-up shop? Why not.) But what about the freaking year-round art scene that grows here even in the sweat lodge of August?

For the second year, local arts advocate and facilitator Miami's Independent Thinkers is making sure there's a place for homegrown talent during Art Basel -- that human chain may not be necessary after all. With the help of 305 Creative Group, Red Fish Media, and K17, they're hosting a satellite fair at Casa Wynwood, a gigantic warehouse at NW 1st Court and 21st Street.  And it's locals only.

All South Florida artists over age 18 are eligible and artwork of any

kind - animations, music videos, illustration, performance art, etc. - are

welcomed. Artists have until November 25 to submit online, and the

selections will be announce on November 28th. There's a $20 entry fee

for up to four images and $5 for each additional image, so budget accordingly.

The fair will run from December 2 to 5 at Casa Wynwood (2135 NW 1st Ct.

Miami) and will include live music, DJs, performance art, fashion, and

vittles by Chef Jeremiah of gastropod. Admission cost $10 for students,

$15 general admission. Visit miamithinkerscom.
