The new year is almost upon us, and while many folks will meet midnight by making out with a drunken stranger, one lucky couple will be getting hitched — in Times Square, of all places, on January 1, 2016.

In the running for this very public tying-of-the-knot is Miami couple Alfredo and Monica. Alfredo proposed by enlisting the help of the cheerleading team that Monica coaches. After their choreographed performance (all chronicled on video uploaded to YouTube), she obviously said yes, and now the two are finalists alongside Alexander and Michael, from Atlanta and Georgia, for the big honor.

Both couples will be married by George Zimmer, founder of Generation Tux; however, only one will be dubbed "The First Couple of 2016." They won't know until the big day which couple will get married at which hour, so both sets of lovebirds will have to be dressed and ready to go.

The winner will be determined by public vote, and voting is open online at FirstCouple.GenerationTux.com.

As far as backstory, Alfredo and Monica met at a mutual friend's party about six years ago. Neither of them was single at the time, but once they both freed up, they quickly became a couple. Fast-forward several years, and Alfredo began planning the proposal, which he says was fun.

"I was back and forth on group text message with about four different groups of people trying to get everybody at my house on the same time at the same day. Maybe 50 percent of the people didn’t come, but they did come to the proposal. There was an area of the gym where everybody was that Monica couldn't see. My best friend, who's going to be my best man, was teaching everybody the choreography before they got on the stage."

After the engagement, Alfredo began entering a bunch of wedding-related contests. In addition to winning the Zimmer prize (which required sending a 60-second video explaining why they deserve to win), he also entered a photo shoot contest at a bridal show and won. Clearly, luck is with them.

The couple won a megapackage of prizes from Generation Tux, including a tux for Alfredo; $1,500 toward Monica's dress; a round-trip flight to NYC with two guests; three nights at the Chatwal, a Luxury Collection Hotel; hair and makeup; Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon spa service; $2,500 for "spoiling themselves on the big day"; and other goodies. The ceremony will be live-streamed New Year's Eve.
