That's it; we're convinced the world's going to end tomorrow. Macho Man Randy Savage has died, and truthfully, Cultist doesn't want to live in a time where the greatest professional wrestler isn't pushing Slim Jim. We're taking the tragic news as confirmation that the Rapture is in fact looming.
TMZ reported that 58-year-old Savage, whose real name is Randall Mario Poffo, suffered a heart attack while driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler in Tampa earlier this morning. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle "veered across a concrete median" onto oncoming traffic, ultimately colliding head-on with a tree. The former wrestler was taken to Largo Medical Center after the accident, but died from his injuries.
Poffo's wife, Lynn, was also in the car at the time of the accident, but "survived with minor injuries," according to the web site. Both were wearing their seat belts.
Macho Man's rise to superstardom began in the mid-'80s when he signed with Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation. His colorful persona made him a fan favorite, and his "Ooooh Yeaaahhh" catchphrase helped land him a gig as the Slim Jim spokesperson.
Perhaps Macho Man's most bizarre career move, however, came in 2003 when the pop culture personality released a rap record. Be a Man featured 14-tracks of in-your-face wrestle rap complete with a diss track aimed at the Hulkster, Terry "Hulk Hogan" Boella.
It's always sad when a wrestler dies, but Macho Man hated tears. Rather than hanging our heads, and crying over the death of our favorite childhood WWF superstar, we're celebrating Randy Savage by munching down some beef jerky and watching old interviews of the great one.
