The Mayer/Borscht video "Scenic Jogging" (posted below) recently screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Optic Nerve Festival, but it was not selected for the museum's permanent collection. It seems the Guggenheim jury, which includes members of Animal Collective, filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan), and visual artist Takashi Murakami, thought more highly of it.
The video shows Mayer running through Wynwood as background images are projected onto urban blight. Borscht's Lucas Leyva says "We shot it in one night driving around Wynwood in my pickup truck with a rig I built consisting of a generator, projector, DVD player, and a mess of wires. Jillian got very sweaty."
Mayers told us, "I am very excited to be considered for the Guggenheim. Although, I was not excited to have shin splints after taping my video. I hope now I can have free or reduced admission to the museum, since they did not want to take my student ID last time I visited."
"Scenic Jogging" is up against viral videos such as OK Go music
video "This Too Shall Pass," and Improv Everywhere's "Human Mirror." The jury will narrow down the picks to a winning 20, which will
be screened on kiosks in Guggenheim museums in New York; Berlin; Bilbao,
Spain; and Venice, Italy on October 21. Good luck, Miami kids. Make us
proud.
