For those of us needing a glamorous dose of drag while Rupaul's Drag Race is on hiatus, or for those of us who are still recovering from the shock of Tyra being crowned last season's winner (everyone knows that Raven should have won), there's a fierce and fabulous drag competition at Miami's Club Sugar. Drag Wars, hosted by the infinitely marvelous Victoria Sky (AKA Rob Sky), showcases Miami's best drag queens every Thursday night. Tonight, witness the Drag Wars' semi-finals, when potential divas compete for a $100 prize and a chance to compete in the grand finals in November for $1,000 cash.
When it comes to Drag Wars, Sky says to expect the unexpected. "I usually open the show with a song, and in between contestants I'll interact with the audience and make jokes. No topic is off-limits for me. The show is not for the faint of heart."
Cheap drink specials ($5 house drinks and $4 domestic beers) and no
cover charge make this a weekly event worth scheduling into your day
planner. Located in the heart of Miami, Club Sugar has plenty of free
parking and you can sashay your way next door to Super Pizzeria (open
until 3 a.m.) for a sobering late-night slice.
Before and after the show, DJ Juan Carlos spins house, hip-hop, and
Latin beats. And keep an eye out for audience giveaways, when Sky bestows
lucky members of the crowd with free CDs and posters. Even if you
haven't yet fallen in love with boys in dresses, Drag Wars provides an
evening you won't want to miss and you don't have to play for the pink
team to enjoy the show.
"I'll have a group of straight girls come in for their bachelorette
party one night, a birthday party another. It really is such an open
place that you get all types of people, men, women, gay, straight. Come
one come all."
Club Sugar (2301 SW 32 Ave., Miami) opens at 10:30 p.m. Call 786-970-3836 or visit www.clubsugarmiami.com.
