If you show up to tonight's book signing with Lindsay at Books & Books, don't expect him to know what's going to happen with the series. In fact, since season one, which was based on Darkly Dreaming Dexter, the show's producers haven't really consulted Lindsay about the direction of the show, except for a clarification here and there. "There is always a little be of disconnect when I'm watching the show. It's just like if I was watching American Idol."
In fact, (possibly spoiler alert) the end of season four took a drastically different direction from the book by killing off one of its main characters, one that you'll find alive and well in Dexter is Delicious.
"I understand why they did it. It makes for great TV," Lindsay explained. He says he's more than fine with the direction the writers have taken the show, even if his Dexter Universe is vastly different. Without revealing too much from the latest Dexter novel, Lindsay has America's favorite serial killer juggling married life, a new daughter, and two stepchildren that also carry the "Dark Passenger" within -- oh, yea and killing the bad guys too.
Just whatever you do, don't call Dexter a vigilante. "Vigilante is someone who kills to right a wrong. Dexter kills because he needs to."
So will he be wrapping up the Dexter series any time soon?
"As long as people want to read it, I will write about it."
Guess not.
