Classic Films Showing in Miami in April

A slew of classic films are showing throughout Miami in April month, so get excited. Here's what to look forward to this month:

Cosford Cinema
The Douglas Sirk retrospective that kicked off in March with All That Heaven Allows (and a film it inspired — Far From Heaven — which screened in February) continues this month at the Cosford Cinema. Sunday, April 17, at 6 p.m., Imitation of Life will be shown on 35mm. Tickets cost $5. 

Dive Into the Arts
Tigertail Productions has a fascinating month of several showings tied together by the theme of water. Though San Andreas and The Day After Tomorrow are relatively new flicks, the rest are older. Playing at SoundScape are Niagara (1953) Wednesday, April 6, and What Lies Beneath (2000) Wednesday, April 27. Both screenings are free. At the Miami Beach Cinematheque Wednesday, April 20, and Friday, April 22, is Kelly Reichardt's directorial debut, River of Grass, freshly restored. 

French Films on the Beach
The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Miami Beach Arts in the Parks continue to offer free French films (with English subtitles), including three for April. The first is Jean-Luc Godard's A Bout de Soufflé (Breathless) Tuesday, April 5, at SoundScape. Also at SoundScape is Zazie Dans le Metro, by Louis Malle, Tuesday, April 19. Between those is a special screening of Paris nous appartient (Paris Belongs to Us), by Jacques Rivette, at Miami Beach Cinematheque Thursday, April 7. 

Coral Gables Art Cinema 
April is another loaded month at Coral Gables Art Cinema. Secret Celluloid Society's residence at the cinema has ended, but the After Hours series Saturdays continues with four more films: The Big Lebowski April 9, Fight Club April 16, Monty Python and the Holy Grail April 23, and Raging Bull April 30. Showtime is 11:30 p.m. Admission costs $7 and includes popcorn.

If you're into daytime movie viewing, The Iron Giant: Signature Edition shows Saturday, April, and Sunday, April 10. Jerry Lewis' The Nutty Professor  also screens April 10, and Ettore Scola's A Special Day is up Tuesday, April 12. And Sunday, April 17, comes Ingmar Bergman's film version of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, being shown on 35mm. 

O Cinema
At O Cinema Wynwood, Popcorn Frights will be celebrating the 35th anniversary of An American Werewolf in London on Friday, April 8 and the 30th anniversary of Little Shop of Horrors will be celebrated Tuesday, April 26th, both newly restored. And with Secret Celluloid Society's move to O Cinema Miami Beach, a month of classics on 35mm begins Saturday nights with The Matrix April 9, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory April 16, Natural Born Killers April 23, and The Witches April 30.

The Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In offers a few options this month: Goldfinger and Dr. No April 9, The Wizard of Oz (with optional Pink Floyd soundtrack) April 16, and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark April 23 and 30.
