The 14,000-person, Miami-Dade town of Sweetwater doesn't find itself in the news often, but it did get some headlines for being the first city in the entire nation to ban "fake marijuana," and boy do they love to brag about. In fact, apparently Miami-Dade is mulling over the possibility of a county-wide ban. We didn't hear about it from the county though. Sweetwater is so damn proud of their practically useless ban that they went ahead and sent out a press release boasting about it.
The bolded emphasis is theirs. They really are proud.
Collier County, Miami-Dade County, the City of Deerfield Beach and the City of Sunrise have taken the first step toward also passing an ordinance to ban "fake marijuana". Each one has contacted the City of Sweetwater to request a copy of an ordinance passed on first reading by the Sweetwater commission May 7 that bans "loose leaf and granular incense" from being sold in the city...They sure are proud of this damn ban. But how much of a threat is "fake marijuana" really?
The City of Sweetwater - a three square mile municipality in South Florida - is the first municipality in the nation to pass an ordinance that bans the sale of "fake marijuana" or loose leaf and granular incense in what is a David versus Goliath-like war on fake pot. The second reading of the ordinance will be at 8 p.m. Monday, May 21.
You might remember that the State of Florida has already banned the sale of products containing certain chemicals often used to make fake "cocaine" and "marijuana," but chemists have been able to concoct new mixtures for the drugs with different chemicals. The Sweetwater law apparently just flat out bans any sort of "incense" that could be mistaken for marijuana.
Miami-Dade seems to be on a tear lately finding smoke-able substances it can ban. The county is also mulling over a ban on flavored tobacco products, including blunts.
