Your kids' ride to school every morning could soon be sponsored by Coca-Cola, Kendall Toyota or Disney Channel. A new bill introduced in the Florida House of Representatives would allow school districts to sell advertising space directly on the school bus.
While taxis and public buses have long been decked out in advertisements, school buses have remained the final advertising frontier in public transportation.
If HB1 passes, it could change that.
The bill was filed today by Rep. Irv Slosberg, a Democrat from Boca Raton. The bill would allow (but not require) school districts to swap out that trademark yellow for ads. Though all ads would have to be "family and child friendly."
Advertisements for alcohol, tobacco products, gambling and prescription pills are off limits, as are ads that are sexual in nature. Ads that deal with abortion (either for or against), political campaigns, religion are also specifically not allowed.
Only two ads would be allowed on each bus, and they could not be longer than six feet or higher than two feet.
Fifty percent of ad revenue would be used for transportation costs, 15 percent for driver education, and the rest for other school-related programs.
The bill is still a long way from a vote. The legislative session does not begin until March 5.
