Donna Shalala Releases Video Comments on Shapiro Scandal, Says 15 Current Players are Under Investigation

As the University of Miami weathered a category five storm of controversy last week spurred by Nevin Shapiro's investigations, the university's president Donna Shalala remained relatively quiet, only releasing a terse statement. This afternoon she released a nearly six minute video on YouTube commenting on the scandal, and says that 15 current University of Miami athletes are under investigation.

"I'm saddened and disappointed by the allegations leveled by some current and former members of the University community," said Shalala.

"When our values are called into question, as they have been this past week, we have

only one option: do what is right and to have confidence in tomorrow," she continued. "We will not let others define us. The allegation leveled against current and former Miami coaches and student athletes and coaches are serious, and we are treating them with the urgency and priority they warrant."

Shalala also says she has had relatively little to say over the past week because the NCAA has asked the school to remain quiet on specific allegation until the investigation is complete.

However, she did note that 15 student athletes are under investigation, and the school is trying to determine their eligibility swiftly before the beginning on the season.
