The law came a little closer today to catching up with former congressman David Rivera.
Ana Sol Alliegro, Rivera's longtime confidante and self-described "conservative bad girl," has now decided to plead guilty to several charges to avoid trial next week. According to several reports, Alliegro and Rivera secretly conspired to fund and run a campaign for a ringer candidate, Justin Lamar Sternad, in the primary against Rivera's Democratic rival, Joe Garcia.
Rivera has yet to be charged with any crimes. However, he is named in evidence as "Co-conspirator D." According to the Miami Herald, the judge in Alliegro's case urged a prosecutor to identify "D," thus marking the first time Rivera has officially been named a co-conspirator.
Sternad, who was sentenced to seven months in jail this past July after a plea deal of his own, told the FBI that he believes Rivera was helping to fund his campaign. But Sternad dealt officially with only Alliegro, who was his de facto campaign manager.
In any event, Alliegro, who had fled to Nicaragua to run a hair salon shortly after the scandal broke, pleaded guilty to charges of providing a false statement, conspiring, and making illegal campaign contributions. She could face up to five years in prison, but she would likely see that time severely drop if she agreed to cooperate in the investigation of Rivera.
Meanwhile, Rivera had announced earlier this year he'd run for his old congressional seat, but he pulled out of the race. However, his name will still appear on next Tuesday's ballot.
