Let's take a look at Florida's laws. Gay marriage? Banned in the constitution. Gay adoption? Illegal. Bestiality? Technically legal.
Yep, Florida is one of 16 states that doesn't ban inter-species sexual contact. Though, usually bestiality practitioners get charged with animal cruelty. Sen. Nan Rich (who will lead Democrats in the Senate come 2010) is finally pushing to put a law on the books. Today a Senate committee voted to make the act punishable with a third degree felony.
Could you imagine the attack ads that could come out of this if anyone actually voted against the measure? "Tim Calhoun voted for bestiality. Are those the kind of values you want in Tallahassee?"
Oh, there's also this gem from the St. Pete Times/Herald report:
.That last provision tripped up Miami Democratic Sen. Larcenia Bullard.
"People
are taking these animals as their husbands? What's husbandry?" she
asked. Some senators stifled laughter as Chairman Charlie Dean
explained that husbandry is a term for the rearing and caring of
animals.
