A minute ago, still buzzing from the twin highs of payday and a certain psychotropic substance, I had the sudden realization: Green is a very good color. For a second, it seemed like a weird kind of intellectual smoke that meant precisely nothing, just floating past. Then, the rest came: Green is the color of money and green is the color of ganja. And all seemed right with the world until James Brown popped out of a fifty-dollar bill, screaming: "Go unto Mary Jane Mondays, son!!!"

I almost pooped my pants. But turns out, old J.B. was right. Yes,

Mary Jane Mondays is a night for those who know the green in all its

shades. And yes, it's also a night for those who enjoy free chicken

wings till midnight. But moreover -- with DJs Kenny Dynamite and Fiyah

Vibez dropping hot wax of the funk, classic hip-hop, reggae, and other

grooveable varieties -- it's a night that is, as the Godfather himself

would scream: "A taste of the real Soul ... Ya dig!!!!"

Monday. Jazid, 1342 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Doors open at 10

p.m., and admission is free. Ages 21+ with ID. 305-673-9372; jazid.net

Keep Miami New Times Free... Since we started Miami New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Miami, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Miami with no paywalls.
