Five Things You Didn't Know About Ndamukong Suh

When the Miami Dolphins signed Ndamukong Suh to a record-breaking deal that will pay him approximately $114 million, with $60 million in guaranteed money, most fans knew what kind of player the team was getting. In a day and age when large contracts are commonly given to questionable players, Suh seemed like one of the surest guys the team could invest in on the field.

But since Suh has arrived, something has surprised the average Dolphins fan: Suh is already one of the smartest, most interesting Fins off the field in years. He's borderline Shane Battier-intriguing to hear speak.

So what else don't we know about Suh?

Ndamukong appeared on a Fox dating show called The Choice in 2012.
This is a thing that happened. In 2012, Suh appeared on The Choice, a dating show where he had to choose between Christie, a chef who wanted everyone to know she had just recently rescued a cat, and Diana, a U.S. Air Force vet who had recently tried out for a lingerie football team. Suh chose Diana, and they went miniature golfing; ultimately, it was not a match, and they decided they were better off friends.

Suh is named after his great-grandfather, Ndamukong Suh, a seven-foot-three World War II veteran.
If you think Suh is intimidating, imagine if he stood seven feet three inches tall; the thought must have Pat Riley fumbling a bag of championship rings. A 7'3" Suh sounds like the most intimidating thing that could ever run toward you. Even picturing that human being is terrifying. If Suh were 7'3" like his great-grandpa, the Dolphins would never have to worry about the other team ever kicking a field goal again.

Suh comes from a huge soccer family; his father and sister played professionally.
Suh's father, Michael, played semiprofessional soccer in Germany, and his sister, Ngum, played college soccer for Mississippi State and professionally for the Cameroonian national team. Suh's dad actually tried to send him to a soccer boarding school — but his growing body and his mother's vetoing of that decision ended any plans he had of choosing soccer over football.

In the Ngemba language of Cameroon, Ndamukong means "House of Spears."
What does your name mean? Do you even know? It doesn't matter, because it's not anywhere near as cool as the meaning of Suh's first name. Imagine if your name meant "House of Samurai Swords" or "House of Machine Guns"; no wonder this dude switches gears on the field. He was born to battle. Also, this means that at one point in history, there was a seven-foot-three man named "House of Spears" fighting in a war.
On April 11, 2011, Suh broke the record for the largest tweetup
Before a Nebraska Cornhuskers spring football game in 2011, Suh got a record 1,951 followers from Twitter to meet. A year later, he went for it again. Less than 2,000 people might not sound like a lot, but it just goes to show Suh is approachable, and it says a lot about his personality. Since Suh joined the Dolphins, fans have already seen that side of him, and it's gone a long way toward calming fears that the team gave a lot of money to a loose cannon.
