There's a neat little cultural gem brilliantly shining from the recesses of shipping containers just north of the Adrienne Arsht Center: MicroTheater Miami.

Located on the patio of the Cultural Center of Spain (also known as Centro Cultural Español), MicroTheater Miami is an innovative take on live theater. The way it works is that each shipping container is a separate stage, so to speak. The seven containers have the capacity to seat 15 audience members with each container housing a different 15-minute play which makes for a rapid, but intimate experience. The plays are held throughout the night and each troop performs their show up to six times every evening. It may be an exhausting, even grueling night for the actors, but an absolute boon for the crowds. Genres vary and include comedy, drama, mystery, improv and musicals.

The concept originated in Spain and arrived on our shores about four years ago. Last year, MicroTheater Miami expanded linguistically by including English plays in addition to its Spanish fare. Over the next few weeks, audiences can enjoy the “Best Of” the 2014/15 season.

The schedule for Best of Micro is as follows: English prime time begins August 5 and runs through September 3 with shows Wednesday and Thursday from 8 to 11 p.m. The Spanish prime time starts August 7 and runs through September 6. Those shows take place Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again Sundays from 7 to 10 p.m.

During the course of those five weeks, actors, writers, and directors from across South Florida will come together to present over sixty plays. And perhaps one of the most alluring aspects is the price. It''s up to audiences how many plays they want to see and how much they want to spend. It's $5 per show, (or $4 per show for CCE Miami members.)
