A Miami Police officer has shot a man in Overtown, police officials confirm. Sgt. Javier Ortiz, president of the Miami police union, tells New Times "the officer is fine, but the suspect is wounded." The MPD hasn't officially released any other details about the shooting.
But reports from the scene suggest the officer shot a homeless man when he wouldn't drop a stick. A large group of kids was nearby at a summer camp when the shooting took place.

The Miami PD, it's worth noting, remains under federal supervision after the Justice Department ruled in 2013 that the force had demonstrated a pattern of excessive force. Part of that judgment concerned a stretch when MPD officers shot and killed seven black men in eight months. We'll update this post as more information about the shooting becomes available.
