"Sexual preferences aren't a choice for the vast and enormous majority of people. In fact, the bottom line is, I believe sexual preference is something that people are born with," Rubio said in a sit-down interview with Bob Schieffer on CBS's Face The Nation on Sunday.
The comments, however, came after Rubio said he wasn't "against gay marriage," but that he believes the definition of marriage is between one man and one woman and if anyone wants to change that it should be brought up before the state legislature. The comments also come just days after Rubio told Fusion's Jorge Ramos that he would attend a gay wedding.
"If it's somebody in my life that I care for, of course I would," Rubio told Ramos when asked if he would attend a gay wedding for a gay close friend or family member. "I'm not going to hurt them simply because I disagree with a choice they've made or because I disagree with a decision they've made, or whatever it may be."
So basically Rubio thinks being gay is not a choice, but getting gay married is a choice. Which, OK, technically that may be true.
It's just quite odd that the year in 2015 where gay marriage is now legal in 36 states with no discernible society-ruining effects that presidential candidates are still going on the record to say that being gay is not a choice in the first place.
We assure you, we will not get any other similar obvious quotes from Rubio during the campaign like the following:
- "I believe that the sky appears blue for the vast majority of people in the daytime."
- "You know, it's an issue I think many of us have evolved on in recent years, but I've come to the conclusion that what goes up must come down and that gravity does indeed exist on the planet Earth."
- "I wouldn't want to disrespect anyone else who disagrees, but I believe in my heart of hearts that honey comes from bees."
- "Ducks when they are younger are called ducklings, and I would never compromise my deeply held beliefs by suggesting otherwise."
- "Cake tastes good, Bob, and I recognize there is room for debate on this issue, but I know where I stand."
