On Sunday, suit up for a lovefest. Well, sort of. Heart of a Chef will pit two local toques in a culinary battle to raise funds for the Florida Heart Research Institute. Each chef will create a heart-healthy meal using mystery ingredients. The kid-friendly event takes place April 28 from 3 to 7 p.m. and includes interactive displays, food and wine samplings, and a cooking demonstration by vegan chef and author Ellen Kanner. The competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30 presale or $40 at the door. Each paid adult ticket includes admission for two children.
This week we were saddened by the news that one of Miami's quaintest bakeries is closing. After just nine months in the business, Acme issued a statement via social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, saying that the $10,000-a-month rent was too difficult to meet by selling bread. The going-away bash (April 27 and 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) will offer blackboard specials and favorites and 50 percent off all their breads, plus additional giveaways. BYOB and tip your hats to the place. We're sad to see the charming shop go, but with heads like the ones behind The Federal, it won't be long before we see them open another set-up.
Authentically EATalian Restaurants Weekend
It won't take long for you to find someone on the street that thinks you can't find a decent Italian restaurant in Miami. In some cases, they're right. But in other cases, they're very, very wrong. While it might just be a handful, Miami in fact has a handful of quality Italian restaurants worth your buck. The Italy-America Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with a few Italian eateries in town, want to show introduce Miami to the true Mediterranean diet. Restaurants like Quattro, Pelican, Salumeria 104, Toscana Divino, Pepe Nero, Tiramesu, Piccola Cucina, and Caffe Milano will be participating in the weekend-long Italian fest. This week, we gave you the ten best bars on South Beach. We can bitch and complain all we want that there's no where for locals to go on SoBe, but our list proves you wrong ten times. From Ted's Hideaway, to The Room, to Abraxas, to Lush, there are ample places to choose from when planning a bar hop on the beach. So, we challenge you, loyal readers of Short Order. We challenge you to find a place on our list that you hate going to. Because if you do, you've still got nine more options. Just in case.
Hopefully your guayaberas are ironed. Hopefully your cigars are cut and ready to meet a zip lighter. Hopefully, you're in that Habana state of mind. You're going to need all of this for Taste of Cuba, happening tonight from 5 to 11 p.m. at Miami Circle in Brickell. Available will be all the lechon asado your heart can dream of, all the dark rum and mojitos your head can handle, and all the Cuban musica your body can take. We can't go to Cuba, so this is the next best thing.
