Michael's Genuine Food Cart on the Move

The Michael's Genuine food cart, which made its debut last month, will make two appearances this week. Tomorrow, April 7, Michael Schwartz and his foodie pushcart will be at the Roots in the City grand opening ceremony. This nonprofit organization is all about bringing fresh, healthful fare to the inner city. Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado will also be on hand for the reception, as well as vendors from Teena's Pride, Bee Haven Farm, and Hani's Mediterranean Organics. Short Order is most excited about the complimentary dishes Schwartz and pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith will portion out from their cart, including shrimp Creole, collard greens, and cinnamon apple raisin bread pudding. These recipes come straight from Booker T. Washington High School's Overtown Community Cookbook. The festivities begin at 2 p.m. at the intersection of NW Second Avenue and 10th Street in Overtown.

On Saturday night, the MGFC will make an appearance at Art Walk in the Design District. With the aid of two sophomores from Johnson & Wales, Schwartz will serve an all-new menu from the back of his portable food pod. This month's offerings span local passion fruit sweet tea; slow-roasted and shredded pork shoulder with Anson Mills cheese grits, heirloom tomato chow chow, and parsley sauce; garlic chili crab dip with housemade chips; and peanut butter s'mores with toasted homemade marshmallow. The cart will be parked in front of Brownes & Co. at 87 NE 40th St. The food ran out quickly during their last showing, so Short Order advises that you get there exactly at 8 p.m. so you can nosh on the gourmet to-go dishes and then soak up the art scene.
