What's gotten into Miami robbers this week? Just a few days after the made-for-Hollywood heist of a Coral Gables Bank of America -- complete with a kidnapped teller with a bomb strapped to his chest -- another gang of bandits knocked over a Wendy's in Homestead last night in the middle of the dinner rush.
Just after 7:30, three armed suspects ran into the Wendy's on SW 288th Street, forced five customers and four employees to the floor and took whatever they could, police say. That's when one of the customers started fighting back.
The robbers -- dressed in all black with their faces concealed -- collected cash and jewelry from everyone in the store, says Det. Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department. Then they hopped into a waiting car and sped off.
One of the customers jumped to his feet and ran outside to take down the car's license plate number. When a robber started shooting at him out the back window, the Wendy's patron pulled out his own piece and started shooting back, Zabaleta says.
Ultimately, no one was hurt. Less than an hour later, police found the car floating in a nearby canal. It had been stolen.
