Good news. Rakontur, the Miami-based media studio founded by Alfred Spellman and Billy Corben, is debuting its film Square Grouper at the South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW). The bad news: SXSW is in Austin, Texas, so unless you are planning to attend you'll have to wait a bit longer to catch the flick.
But considering the subject matter, those most interested in catching Square Grouper will be chilling until the documentary hits our theaters -- even if it floats in as slow as stray bales of sweet Mary Jane. There's plenty of reefer to be smoked before then to make the wait bearable.
If you are a square yourself, then you probably don't know that square
grouper refers to marijuana thrown overboard when smugglers were being
pursued by law enforcement officials or that before Miami's Cocaine Cowboy days of the 1980s, it was marijuana that dominated the drug scene
in South Florida in the 1970s and early '80s. If you need do a
refresher course on drug culture, then count on the boys from Rakontur
to give you the lowdown on the Salad Days of green.

Rakontur
continues to produce documentaries about South Florida life which
appeal to a national audience. As well as Cocaine Cowboys and Cocaine Cowboys 2,
they did The U which was part of ESPN's 30 for 30 series, and will be
coming out with Dawg Fight in the near future.
SXSW is among the
more popular film and music festivals in the country and the latest
feather in director Billy Corben's fedora. Also scheduled for world
premiere at SxSW this year are The Beaver, starring and directed by Jodi
Foster and also starring Mel Gibson (is he still getting work?) and
Conan O'Brien Can't Stop.
