Even though cranky American music snobs like Crossfade might dismiss Chris Martin and Coldplay as foreign providers of "safe and sentimental sonic wallpaper," there's no denying that this Brit pop-rock crew stands to inherit the proverbial arena whenever U2 and Radiohead finally shuffle off the scene.
With seven Grammys and over 50 million albums sold, Coldplay is undeniably huge. And despite the fact that the band's latest studio album, Mylo Xyloto, has inspired as many shrugs as superlatives from critics, the record still shot to the top of the Billboard 200, dominated charts in 32 other countries, and scored a Platinum certification after just a couple of months.
But considering this is 2011 and the record industry's on life support, we all know that album sales aren't a band like Coldplay's primary means of income. These superstars need to hit the stadium circuit. And today, Martin and company announced a 21-date North American tour.
Kicking off on April 17, 2012, in Edmonton, Colplay's cross-continental trek will travel to four other Canadian cities -- Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal -- and 16 American metropolises including Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Most importantly for SoFla fans of "safe and sentimental sonic wallpaper," though, the Mylo Xyloto odyssey finally arrives in Miami on June 29 for a show at the American Airlines Arena.
