Is Lady Gaga really Freddie Mercury in reincarnated drag?
Probably not. Mother Monster was already five years old when Mercury died in 1991. But the two flamboyant icons have a lot in common. So much, in fact, that Queen guitarist Brian May is hinting at the possibility of Lady Gaga filling in as the new lead singer of the legendary rock band.
"We talk about going out on the road all the time," May told the Daily Express, "but there's a bit of a singer problem to put it mildly."
The problem: Freddy Mercury is goddamn irreplaceable. Dude is a rock legend. He was a masterful pianist and an incredibly gifted vocalist. Even though Queen's performed without him over the years, it's always been as Queen + ______. And pretty soon, it might be Queen + Lady Gaga.
"We get a lot of offers to work with other people. I worked with Lady Gaga and she's very creative, and is someone we've talked about singing, fronting the band with."
May is referring to his collaboration with Gaga on "You & I," the fourth single off Born this Way. He also performed the track with the singer at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
While it's still uncertain as to when, if ever, Gaga will join Queen, May does admit that there's potential for a television special in Queen's future.
"We have talked about doing duets with other people and in a strange way I almost pressed the yes button. We were debating the idea of a TV show where we have all these guest stars. We didn't press it today but we are still looking at it. Lady Gaga has said she would like to do something with us."
Radio Gaga, meet Lady Gaga.
