At this point, whether you’re a hip-hop head or a casual music listener, you’ve probably heard of Kendrick Lamar. His Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City album put Compton in the spotlight once again, even if he did get robbed at the Grammys.
But Lamar is only one man in one of the tightest crews of the modern rap era, and the rest of the Top Dawg Entertainment members deserve just as much of your attention. The second-hottest rising star is none other than Schoolboy Q, who just released the album Oxymoron to great critical acclaim.
By now, you should have his joint effort with Lamar, “Collard Greens,” nearly memorized. Follow-up single “Man of the Year” is perhaps even greater, with enough bouncy bass to set a girl’s ass on fire. Continuing in TDE tradition, Schoolboy Q digs deeper than the usual party-lyric nonsense, but for sure his live shows deliver the energy of a House of Pain track (that means you’re gonna jump around).
If you’re one of those people looking for intelligent hip-hop that bumps, make it out to Mekka (950 NE Second Ave., Miami) this Monday. Doors open at 6 p.m., and tickets cost $25, or $100 for a meet-and-greet. Call 305-371-3773 or visit mekkamiami.com.
