La Gran Naranja is about as South Floridian as New Year’s Eve gets. Recently renamed in honor of Ponce de Leon’s anniversary, the Big Orange will make its annual descent down the side of the InterContinental Miami (100 Chopin Plaza, Miami) to mark the new year. The 35-foot citrus fruit rises 400 feet to the top of the building and then is lowered for a ten-second countdown to midnight. That’s better than the tired Times Square shindig any day. Viewing of the drop is free and begins at 11:59 p.m. Call 305-577-1000.
