Felici Asteinza is all about the process of artistic collaboration, weaving spellbinding, interactive projects that transport spectators to otherworldly realms. Her latest project, “Milagros: Portal Culture,” at the Freedom Tower (600 Biscayne Blvd., Miami), resulted from a community partnership initiative in which she created a site-specific installation and surreal performance space, culminating with a one-night musical eruption during the show’s opening.
Asteinza has been working in Miami as part of a one-week artistic residency sponsored by the National Performance Network and presented by Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator in partnership with the Miami Dade College Art Gallery System and MDC Live! Performing Arts Series. At the Freedom Tower, her multimedia art-stravaganza has transformed the surroundings into a surreal landscape of vibrant, swirling color, reminiscent of a hallucinatory tropical oasis.
“Her artistic use of cultural references meld into a living, breathing collage by using assimilated images, performance, and music to challenge each viewer’s interpretation as she and her group disassemble ‘accepted thinking.’ It’s an exciting interaction of mediums, as Felici creates storytelling through interdisciplinary platforms,” says Rosie Gordon-Wallace, director and curator of Diaspora Vibe Gallery.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: July 3. Continues through July 27, 2012
