Classical music aficionados will get a taste of the old and the new this Thursday at 8 p.m. when Perlman and Protégés perform at the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall. Famed violinist Itzhak Perlman — well known for his aching solos in Schindler’s List and his performance for Barack Obama’s inauguration — has assembled nine talented young musicians to perform works by Schumann, Shostakovich, and Mendelssohn.
Think of them as the Avengers, just more focused on music than saving the world (for now). The musicians were discovered through the Perlman Music Program, a school that offers training and performance opportunities to young people ages 12 to 30. Playing violin, viola, cello, bass, and piano, the school’s alumni have quickly risen to the top of the classical music scene, so now is the perfect opportunity to witness a few rising stars before they hit the big time.
