The immigrant experience is both universal and intensely personal. In her exhibit Made in Colombia, artist Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi explores the perils of being uprooted and the self-discovery that succeeds displacement. Using found objects such as dolls, shoes, and clothing, Yaghoubi creates 3-D displays. A native of what some others call cocaine country, she felt pressure to assimilate when she moved to the U.S. and has used found objects as a way to preserve her identity and integrity as an immigrant. The installation which will be set up in the second floor windows of ArtCenter for Colombian Independence Day evokes the emotional upheaval felt by those who come from a foreign land to live in this country. The exhibit opens this Friday and will be up through August 8. There will be a special Colombian Independence Day celebration on July 20.
