If Dolls Could Talk

The immigrant experience is both universal and intensely personal. In her exhibit “Made in Colombia,” artist Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi explores the perils of being uprooted and the self-discovery that succeeds displacement. Using found objects such as dolls, shoes, and clothing, Yaghoubi creates 3-D displays. A native of what some others call “cocaine country,” she felt pressure to assimilate when she moved to the U.S. and has used found objects as a way to preserve her identity and integrity as an immigrant. The installation — which will be set up in the second floor windows of ArtCenter for Colombian Independence Day — evokes the emotional upheaval felt by those who come from a foreign land to live in this country. The exhibit opens this Friday and will be up through August 8. There will be a special Colombian Independence Day celebration on July 20.
