Although written in 1990, just after the first intifada (Palestinian resistance), the provocative and explosive stage play Masked still packs a palpable punch in its candid depiction of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The play follows three Palestinian brothers torn between their obligations to family, ideology, and survival in a West Bank village. Masked paints a somewhat sympathetic picture, displaying the siblings’ all too real life-and-death struggle as they wrestle with a decision to join the intifada, resist it, or flee altogether. With this play, originally written in Hebrew (and translated into English by Michael Taub), Israeli playwright Ilan Hatsor has provoked an open-minded and honest discussion on the subject. During its 17-year run, it has been embraced by both Israeli and Palestinian communities. Directed by Joseph Adler, Masked opens this Saturday at GableStage at the Biltmore.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: July 9. Continues through Aug. 7, 2011
