What happens when Super Bowl week, a great celebration of American excess, hits South Beach, a community not exactly known for restraint? Does 350 top fashion models playing beach volleyball in front of a crowd of more than 10,000 sound about right? Well thats the idea behind Ocean Drives fourteenth-annual Volleypalooza, which will also include a set from DJ AM, a Speedo fashion show, and a live music performance. This spectacle, which can be described only as Zoolander-esque, goes down today from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the beach at Eighth Street and Ocean Drive.
Naturally thats not all. The Motorola Mile, which runs from Wednesday through Sunday, will turn Ocean Drive from Fifth Street to Fifteenth Street into a pedestrian mall celebrating the history of the big game in Miami. Kiosks will recount the past eight Super Bowls played here, including II (Vince Lombardis last), III (Namaths guarantee), and XXXIII (Elways final game). Motorola Field, at Tenth Street, will allow visitors to play out their own football heroics in an interactive setting. Unfortunately none of these simulations involves Dan Marino winning a Super Bowl. Still, you might see him around, because NFL legends, stars, mascots, and cheerleaders will be present.
Sat., Feb. 3, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
