The proprietors of Jakes Bar tout their establishment as a watering hole for grownups. Indeed the plush corner pub comes across as the kind of highfalutin bar where a drink might cost well into the double digits. Despite the gleaming mahogany and dim lighting, the place still feels as welcoming as your neighborhood tavern. Perhaps the happy hour has something to do with the Cheers-like atmosphere. Pull up a seat to the impressive wood bar and find out. Weekdays from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., draft brewskis are three dollars, well drinks cost four, and for the month of August, Skyy vodka martinis will set you back a fiver. Charming bartender Brent Houghton slides your lemon drop across the smooth bar in an elegant glass complete with sugared rim and yellow wedge in place. Jazz twinkles in the background as the crowd grows thicker and louder. You can simply nibble appetizers (the shiitake mushroom pizette and the Thai grilled chicken drummettes are amazing), but you really should settle in for dinner.
