Soprano saxophonist Marion Meadows has built a career purveying what is politely called "smooth jazz." As cool as that (and he) may be -- cool being code for both contemporary and chill -- it could be noted that the guy has paid some dues and enjoyed intriguing adventures since those classical lessons (on clarinet) at age eight.

He has studied and collaborated with about a million other players, gaining confidence during high school when he performed in Europe and learned there are audiences that appreciate jazz and musicians in general. Born in West Virginia but raised in Connecticut, and as ethnically mixed as Tiger Woods, Meadows has shown tenacity -- banging around clubs in Phoenix, having his first recording shelved, and teaching the Western music business to South Africans. You can hear his wisdom in the fluid grooves and sultry sexiness of his current, and firmly established, styling. Meadows plays four shows over two nights (tonight and Saturday, 9 and 11) at the Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club.
