Andalusia to Algiers

The saccharine songs and contrived choruses of musicals can certainly make you cringe. Thankfully, Flamenco Gipsy Fusion is no Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Vocalist and guitarist Chico Castillo, one of the founders of the Gipsy-Oriental style of music, has a more cosmopolitan take on the musical in his latest show, and he has the experience of captivating global audiences with a unique blend of Spanish flamenco, Gipsy, and Eastern sounds and rhythms. His first musical, Don Juan, received critical praise from Canada to Korea, but Castillo had never before showcased his talents in the United States. That changes this Friday through Sunday at the Arsht Center.

Fans can look forward to hearing him perform classics such as “Djobi Djoba” as well as hits from his more recent album, Vuelvo. And since the cast of Flamenco Gipsy Fusion includes 22 of the most talented flamenco dancers in the world, it’s guaranteed to be far more exotic than A Chorus Line. Tickets cost $38.50 to $98.75, and showtime is 8 p.m., except for Sunday, when they dance at 7.
Fri., July 10, 8 p.m.; Sat., July 11, 8 p.m.; Sun., July 12, 7 p.m., 2009
