Donna Milo: Sex-changed and bound for Congress

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness once made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke tries to understand how a transsexual running for U.S. Congress can be against gay marriage.

A few weeks ago, I came across some news that blew my mind. A Cuban-American woman who used to be a man is running for Congress in South Florida as a Tea Party Republican. Her name is Donna Milo. She used to be called Ed before surgery in 2000 to become a full-fledged lady. If she wins the primary, Milo will likely face the Democratic incumbent — and female from the beginning — Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Now Milo, who was married to a woman and had two children before her sex change, is off the chain. She is against gay marriage, and she's talking shit about President Obama. She even recently told the Sun-Sentinel that the president and the Democratic majority in Congress are turning the United States into Fidel Castro's Cuba. She also told the newspaper that she represents a "restoration to common-sense American conservative values." Of course, she is against the recent overhaul in health care. According to her website, Milo describes it as "de facto socialism." I can't believe this.

Let me remind Ms. Milo that until 2007, Cuban citizens who wanted to have a sex change couldn't because the government wouldn't allow it. She's lucky to be represented by a president who supports rights for everybody and a health-care system that is for all people, including transsexuals.

What I really can't understand is her anti-gay marriage stance. Isn't that like turning on your own people? It's not like she just woke up one day and decided to become a woman. She knew for a long time that she was a lady in a man's body. That means she was attracted to other men, which to me is the definition of gay. Now she is selling out gays, lesbians, and transgendered folks. Now she wants to crucify them. Milo is just one of these repressed conservative Republican dudes like George Rekers.

And she needs to some homework about her state too. In Florida, Milo is prohibited from marrying a man. State courts recognize only your biological gender at birth, so she could marry only another woman — which would make it a gay marriage — which she opposes. Ain't that some shit?

I think Milo's campaign is a publicity stunt by the rich Republican good ole boys to make the Tea Party look like a grassroots accepting-of-everybody movement. It's a bunch of crap. At the end of the day, how is she going to get conservative Republican voters, especially those old Cubans in Little Havana, to accept that she had a sex change?

And if she did make it to the general election, she has already alienated her own people, as well as moderates who support gay marriage. Milo needs to stand up for people like her. Gays, lesbians, and transsexuals should be proud of her and the likelihood she would represent them at the federal level. Instead, she is their Benedict Arnold.
