Once upon a time, there was a sweet young thing known as house music. House music was simple folk, riding boxcars, carrying only a small bundle wrapped in a kerchief tied to the end of a stick. People said this beat would never amount to anything. But house music didn't listen, and you know what happened? The electronic beat found a home, and that home is Residence at 7th Circuit Studios (228 NE 59th St., Miami) — "Where House Music Lives." Now house spends its nights with DJ Chris, Chilly, DJ Peace, and Andre Soul in the bohemian loft space above the Design District club, safe from the South Beach and downtown Miami crowd that used to mock it. The phrase is a show-biz cliché, but for the artists chosen to perform at the Florida Grammy Showcase, it really is an honor just to be nominated. More than 230 unsigned musicians submitted entries to the local chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for the honor. The remaining six finalists will perform before a crowd of music fans and discerning industry professionals.
