Since III Points launched in 2013, its mission has been bringing the most innovative talent in three industries — music, technology, and art — to Wynwood. This year, the festival is expanding its definition of art with the addition of Vanguard Film Week, a four-day series of films from prestigious festivals such as Sundance and South by Southwest.
The festival, presented in partnership with O Cinema, includes three films — We Are X, The Greasy Strangler, and Contemporary Color — as well as NuWave, a showcase of music videos created by filmmakers and bands large and small.
The films slated for Vanguard represent a blend of the three points of III Points, fusing musical and artistic subject matter with the technical aspects of filmmaking. We Are X tells the story of X Japan, a rock band that's enjoyed huge success worldwide but is still relatively unknown in the United States. Contemporary Color goes inside David Byrne's New York City event celebrating color guard — yes, as in the marching band performers who spin flags and rifles. The Greasy Strangler bucks the music trend; it tells the story of a father-son "disco tour" team living in a town where a killer is carrying out a series of absurdly grisly murders. Since it debuted at Sundance, it has been praised as a modern classic in the style of a John Waters midnight movie. All three Vanguard films will be screened for the first time in Florida at O Cinema Wynwood.

“Vanguard is a showcase of bold, imaginative, and cutting-edge filmmaking with a focus on works that exist at the intersection of where film and music meet," Kareem Tabsch, codirector of O Cinema, said in a statement.
NuWave, meanwhile, is still soliciting music video submissions from filmmakers and musicians in all genres, from established professional musicians to up-and-coming artists. The top films will have the chance to win Foresight passes to III Points 2016 and a possible installation at one of III Points' events during Art Basel Miami Beach this December. Artists can submit their films at filmfreeway.com/festival/nuwave through September 26.
