A lot of odd things happen in Florida every week. On Fridays, we're here to bring you the oddest. This week, that includes secretly LGBT license plates, a violent chicken 'n' biscuits argument, and a rage-filled Uber driver.
"GAY" License Plates Don't Mean Happy
Fun fact: The Florida license plate format is four letters followed by two numbers. On the default plates, the first three letters are separated from the last letter and two numbers by an orange. There are certain words that the state bans from appearing on plates, but "gay" isn't one of them. So it was only a matter of time until the state produced plates starting with "GAY." That combination recently happened, with the series of plates distributed in the Orlando area. Not everyone is happy about their big gay Florida plates.
Earlier this month, Craig Lucas and his partner purchased a new Volvo, and the new plate read, "GAY W13."
"Is this for real?" Lucas asked a dealership employee about the plate, according to WFTV.
It was, and Lucas asked if he could get another one.
"I'm sorry — I think every plate we have had the word 'gay' on it," Lucas said the dealer employee told him.
Lucas and his partner have since parked the car in their garage. "We prefer to keep things a bit quiet," he told the news station.
Reps at the Florida Department of Highway Vehicles say they won't be recalling the plates, but anyone who receives one and wants to return it can do so.
Woman Arrested After Fight With Her Mother Over Chicken 'n' Biscuits
Kirstin Howard arrived home in Bunnell, Florida, at 11:30 p.m. last Friday and decided she was hungry after a night of drinking.
So she decided to fix herself a plate of chicken 'n' biscuits. However, Howard shared her mobile home with her mother, to whom the chicken 'n' biscuits may or may not have rightfully belonged.
The two got into a fight, and the mother accused Howard of coming home drunk and eating her food. Howard responded by hitting her mother and throwing tea at her. She was arrested on domestic battery charges, her sixth battery arrest since 2008.
Uber Driver Pulls Gun on Passenger Who Was Feeling Queasy
Some people love driving for Uber. You get to set your own hours, meet lots of people, and earn extra income. But if you don't like strangers in your car, well, maybe it's not the best job for you.
Patrick McDonald, is a 67-year-old Uber driver in Bradenton (yes, Bradenton has Uber now). Last Friday, he picked up a passenger but got upset when the passenger told him he wasn't feeling well. McDonald stopped the car and forced the passenger out so the man could throw up outside and not all over the interior of his $75,000 car. The passenger said that he didn't need to throw up and that McDonald didn't need to get so physical. The situation escalated pretty quickly, and McDonald ended up pulling a gun on the passenger. McDonald was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery.
McDonald, who had been driving for the company since only the middle of this month, has been temporarily suspended by Uber.
