Miami's entertainment scene got a tad less fabulous last July when the Cabaret South Beach, a bar where waitstaff got up and sang, was forced out by its landlords. Luckily, the popular concept has found a new home at Miami's iconic National Hotel.
Kicking off the soft opening today, a lineup of local singers and dancers will perform starting at 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Attendees can grab a drink at National Hotel's bar or enjoy a full-on French meal at Tamara's Bistro, all while watching some all-star talent belt out classic tunes.
Before its closure, the cabaret was making moves: in just one year and eight months at its prior location, it became the number one Miami Beach nightlife venue on TripAdvisor based on user rankings. "We held auditions originally in Miami," says founder Edison Farrow. "We found an amazing crew of people to bartend and wait tables, and in-between they all take turns performing. Every night is a showcase."
People like R. Kelly, Molly Ringwald, and Dwayne Wade have all been in attendance or performed on the intimate stage. Talent scouts have also taken a liking to attending shows, "You never know who's in the audience," adds Farrow.
The new location adds an extra bonus: optional dinner service. The previous spot didn't have a kitchen and was only equipped to serve
"Within 24 hours [of the previous location closing] I had 12 venues calling me for meetings. I had worked with the National Hotel before and had even done a cabaret night there as a one-time thing. It's a beautiful art deco hotel and they have a Yamaha baby grand piano in the lobby. I felt like it really fit us."
While the atmosphere may be a bit different, the talent is the same as ever, Farrow says. All 15 of the staffers from the former location are returning at the new spot.
"People are really impressed by the level of talent we have. When they hear the singers they never expect them to be as talented as they are."
The soft opening is Friday, October 2, at the National Hotel, 1677 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. A grand opening party will be held Thursday, October 15, at 8 p.m. For more information visit TheCabaretSouthBeach.com. For dinner reservations, call 305-504-7500 or email email@example.com.
