In the aftershock of Monday's loss of famed food writer Josh Ozersky, it touched Miamians' hearts to discover that in an interview last month with SF Weekly, he chose a Magic City restaurant as the answer to the last-meal question.
The Miami native who brought us Meatopia only months ago gave this most epic answer to the age-old question: So what would be your last supper?
You want to talk morbid? I think about that question every three days. The end has to be contained in the beginning, though, so I would have to go back to the happiest/saddest hours of my lonely childhood. So I guess we are saying the palomilla steak piled high with limp, oily, delicate shoestring French fries at Rio Cristal, in Miami, paired with a tall glass of Fox's U-Bet chocolate milk, while watching the "Space Hippies" episode of Star Trek onscreen.Sadly, this locally beloved meal at Rio Cristal with the steak hidden beneath a mountain of fries was not Ozersky's last supper, because he was found lifeless in a Chicago hotel. However, his sentiment is hard to shake because he perfectly expressed that mouth-memory-heart connection that only the best food writers can conjure.
So we raise a glass of chocolate milk to this fine food writer and will think of him fondly the next time we order this playful dish.
