The grassy-hued overhang of this cozy café is a reminder of its go-green mentality, right down to the environmentally friendly napkins and cutlery.

On a recent visit, I dug into a plump, satisfying avocado-and-kale-stuffed sweet potato ($15) paired with a cup of thick, creamy butternut squash soup. Prices for the specials vary, but they hover around $13 to $16.

Flavorful hummus, paired with soft whole-wheat pita bread triangles ($8), also deserves a nod.

Other recent vegan specials have included grilled eggplant and hummus with baby greens, tomatoes, and mushrooms in a wheat wrap; black-bean veggie burger topped with tomato, sautéed portobello mushrooms, and miso dressing; and raw-vegan zucchini spaghetti tossed in sun-dried tomato pesto.

Green Gables is open weekdays only, so you'll have to get your lunch fix elsewhere on weekends. Daily specials are posted on Facebook and sent via email too.
