May 7 is National Home Brew Day and Lou's Beer Garden is celebrating with Big Brew Miami. This is the annual nationwide festival sponsored by the American Homebrewers Association. Each year, the association encourages home brewers to gather and share the fruits of their labors with friends and family!

The festivities start at 5 p.m. with complimentary home-brewed beer tastings and beer bites. Though this is not a judged competition, attendees will receive ranking sheets so they can rate the entries for color and taste. At 6 p.m., glasses will be raised in a simultaneous toast at all 192 Big Brew venues.

Christine Najac from South Florida Food & Wine and Dave Crisafi from South Florida Beer Blog will both be in attendance and two local home brewers, Brett Borrow and Michael Arnold are scheduled to showcase three beers and ales each. More home brewers are expected to be announced.

Ann Castellano, co-owner of Lou's Beer Garden is excited about the event. "It's such an amazing event. We have an excellent beer community in Miami and we're hoping a lot of people come out to support home brewing."

If you're a home brewer, it's not too late to participate. "We would love to get more home brewers," said Castellano. We're welcoming any recipes, especially unusual ones."

Admission is free to the event, but RSVPs are required. To RSVP for the event (or if you're a home brewer who wants to participate), call Ann at 305-704-7879 or email her.
