There's no doubt the biggest beer trend in Miami is homebrew. Everywhere you look -- from clubs such as Misfit Home Brewers to individuals brewing batches in their kitchens -- the make-your-own beer craze is here in full force. And why not?
Beginning homebrewers simply need a kitchen, a small storage area, and about $50 in supplies. There are even homebrewing classes at FIU's Chaplin School to show you the basics.

So New Times' Brew at the Zoo
is introducing Homebrew Alley. Homebrewers will be featured in
their own tent, where they will be able to share their creations with
the public. In addition, the brews will be judged by a panel of beer
experts, with the winners featured on New Times' Facebook pages and on
the event website.
If you're a homebrewer who knows you make the best beer in South Florida, we're looking for you.
Participating brewers must bring the equivalent of at least three kegs
to the event. In return, New Times will provide a table, two chairs,
space in the lighted tent, signage, and two staff badges.
If
you're a homebrewer in Broward or Palm Beach (or you live in Miami-Dade and like to go for a
ride in the car), our sister event, Beerfest, is also looking for homebrewers. Beerfest is April 6 from 6 to 11 p.m. at Esplanade Park in
downtown Fort Lauderdale.
To find out more about participating in either event, contact Anthony Gordon at [email protected] or at 305-571-7579.
The fourth annual Brew at the Zoo will
take place Saturday, May 4, at Zoo Miami from 7 to 11 p.m. The event
features more than 100 beers for sampling, including some rare and
creative homebrews at the Homebrew Alley; delicious food; and live
music featuring a concert by Naughty by Nature.
General
admission tickets cost $35 in advance and $45 at the gate. VIP tickets -- which
grant you entry to the event one hour early, access to the VIP lounge,
and catered food -- cost $75 in advance and $85 at the gate. Purchase advance tickets here.
