The Coen brothers' remake of the John Wayne classic True Grit opens in theaters today, and Wild Turkey Bourbon is ready with a cocktail to match: The Rooster. Named after the irascible main character originally played by Wayne (and now by Jeff Bridges), the drink combines the gold, grit, sarsaparilla and whiskey of the old West.

Makers suggest you catch a matinee, then go home and enjoy the cocktail; we think it might be more fun in the opposite order. As the movie tagline goes, "Punishment comes one way or another."

The recipe follows...

The Rooster

1 1/2 cups Wild Turkey 101
1/2 ounce cinnamon schnapps with gold flakes
4 ounces sarsaparilla or any root beer
Salted rim (provides the grit)

Directions: Combine first three ingredients in shaker with ice. Strain into glass.

Suggest food pairing: Buttered popcorn.
