Over the weekend, the Association of Food Journalists held its annual conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the winners of the annual awards competition were announced. Miami New Times was a finalist in three categories. And the winners are:

Our feature, "Pork Pirates," a look into the illegal slaughterhouses in northwest Miami-Dade by staff writer Gus Garcia-Roberts, won first place in the food feature (Under 200,000 circulation) category.

Food critic Lee Klein placed second for best newspaper restaurant criticism. The San Francisco Chronicle's Michael Bauer took first, while the Washington Post's Tom Sietsema was third. (Klein took first place in the category back in 2008 and has placed twice in the last three years.)

Finally, former contributing writer and current brand manager of Michael's Genuine Food & Drink Jackie Sayet came in third for her "Bogus Beef" piece in the best newspaper food news story category.

Congrats to everyone!
