A suspected car thief fleeing a traffic stop was shot and killed last night in Liberty City by a Miami Beach cop working on a county anti-robbery team.

Details are still sparse -- with a Miami-Dade police spokeswoman this morning declining to name the cop or the victim to Riptide -- but she confirmed the Beach cop killed the man after 8 p.m. near NW 6th Avenue and 75th Street. The man was suspected of stealing an SUV in Palm County, Local 10 reports.

Update: The suspect was 33-year-old Julio Santiago, police say.

The Beach cop was working with a county-wide team called the Robbery Intervention Detail when the suspect's car was spotted.

It's not clear if he was armed or threatened police as he fled from the stop.

"I looked out the window and saw a man in a white T-shirt running from in front of my house to the house next door," a neighbor near the shooting tells Channel 10.

Miami-Dade police expect to release more information about the shooting later today; we'll update this post when we learn more.
