It hasn't been an especially good sports year for hemophiliacs of the green and orange variety, and nothing drives that point home more than the lack of Hurricane wins over Seminole teams. In true team sports, only the Volleyball team has managed to top a 'Noles team this school year. Leave it to the women's basketball team to get revenge. The team crushed FSU last night in an exciting 84-68 win.
The win extends 12th-ranked Miami's home winning streak to 24 games, which ties a school record, and leaves the 'Canes record at home perfect for the season. It also knocked 14th-ranked FSU out of a three way tie for the top of the ACC. Now the 'Canes and the Duke Blue Devils stand alone atop the division.
Let's just talk about how they got there. After battling back and forth in the first half Miami led at the break by a slight 30-28.
FSU came back strong and led by as many as eight points with only 10 minutes to go. The 'Canes managed to battle back, but with less than four minutes, decided this game wasn't merely going to be a close win against a rival. This was going to be a statement. The ladies went on a tear putting up 18 unanswered points and pulled way away, sealing the game.
Which, uh, holy crap!
"The team sort of took on its own personality," coach Katie Meier told Hurricanes Sports. "They just ran traps when they felt like it and stuck with passes. We were swarming and scrambling and I said OK, `Let's keep it up'."
FSU and Miami had met back in January, and the 'Noles gave the 'Canes one of only three of their losses this season.
Miami plays Georgia Tech in an away game on Sunday to close out the regular season. If they win and Duke losses, the 'Canes would earn the number one seed going into the ACC tournament.
