It's almost time for Spring cleaning, and it's not such a bad idea to get a head start on some of the harder tasks.
Do you have a pack of fennec foxes roaming around your living room? One too many boa constrictors? A Kakapo you're tired of? Well, you can drop them off tomorrow at Zoo Miami during Nonnative Pet Amnesty Day.
That's not to make light of the situation. Owners of exotic animals, especially those that were less than legally obtained or are hard to care for, have a tendency of dropping their animals off in the wild once they can no longer take care of them. Of course, as the current python invasion of the Everglades reminds us, that's not exactly a good thing for our local animals.
So Zoo Miami (12400 SW 152nd Street) will host Exotic Pet Amnesty Day this Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All exotic animals, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and mammals, will be accepted. No questions will be asked of those dropping them off. Domesticated animals will not be accepted.
So what happens to all of these animals? The Florida Wildlife Commission is looking for qualified owners to take the animals in.
"We are looking for adopters with the knowledge and expertise to care for exotic pets," said FWC coordinator Jenny Novak, in a statement. "We expect quite a few nonnative animals to be turned over at the Exotic Pet Amnesty Day in Miami, so we want to make sure we have safe homes for them."
